I was literally asking about this guy Nylander the day before the trade in the sabre's blog...

I'm not so sure its lopsided. Nylander seems lost in the AHL. He looks good every year in camp but doesn't quite make the team, then goes down to the AHL and ...I don't think the effort is there.

But it sounds like Chicago will just award him a top six spot, and he could pretty easily get 45 points in that role.

Seems to me Sabres win since Hawks fans are more upset by this than anything... At this point anyways... If Nylander develops into a top line winger and joker doesn't crack the top 4, then it'll be a different story. But if joker is a top 4 d man them Nylander has to at least be a marginal top line winger...

Posted this in the Buffalo blog too...

I find it hard to believe that a guy who looks to be a certifiable bust with barely a 40 point/82 Games AHL scoring pace is the best that we could have gotten for a guaranteed #4 RHD, with #2 D potential....at 20 yrs old, who just played for Finald's Gold Medal World Team, and was a favorite in his rookie year of the 2nd winningest coach in NHL history.

Sorry Henri, 33 yr old Swedish League Legend Coach Jeremy Colliton didn't like you, so now we get a boom or bust lottery ticket in Nylander. I hope Nylander can get open and bury wide open looks given to him by Kane or Strome/Debrincat, bc he sure as heck doesn't seem like a guy who can play anywhere but in the Top 6.

I really am hoping it was an attitude/motivation/mental thing with Nylander and he will be excited to get a chance to play with Kane and show why DrafSite.com's (and Hockeybuzz contributor) Wiz said this about him.."possible the most skilled player in the draft. "

I really liked Jokiharju...calm, poised, smart, good passer, accurate shot, played far more mature than his age when thrown into the worst D-Core in the NHL as a rookie last Fall....I really think that Dahlin-Jokiharju can be a legit top pairing for years to come.

Nylander has been “injured” for nearly every camp. He has not participated in a dev camp in a few years. Not sure where you are getting he looks good.

Not Dev camp, preseason. Sorry wrong word. I genuinely thought he deserved a spot on the roster last fall.

Blackhawks rookie defenseman Henri Jokiharju shuts down star, opens eyes

Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville has spoke glowingly of 19-year-old Henri Jokiharju. Paul Vernon/AP

Coach Joel Quenneville almost never is quick to praise a young player, particularly a young defenseman.

At best, a player who lacks experience might get the following endorsement: “I didn’t mind him.” Other common critiques by Quenneville include, “He was just OK,” which means something less than OK, and, “He was ordinary,” which is about as bad as it gets.

So it was striking when Quenneville spoke glowingly about 19-year-old defenseman Henri Jokiharju this week.

“I liked him a lot,” Quenneville said after the Blackhawks’ 2-1 overtime loss Sunday to the Oilers. “He had a great start [to the season], and I liked him over the last three or four games. He’s done well.

“He’s out there against top guys. He’s got a tremendous gap; he’s got quickness; he recovers well. He’s going to get better with his stick. He makes a lot of direct plays. He’ll get better in that area, recognize options offensively. But getting exposed to [those] type of assignments at this stage of his career is pretty flattering, but he’s handled it extremely well.”

In other words, Quenneville really doesn’t mind him.

Has he spoken like this about any other young blue-liner? This type of praise typically is reserved for proven veterans, not a baby-faced Finn.

But Jokiharju has earned the off-ice compliments because of his on-ice accomplishments.

Quenneville leaned heavily on Jokiharju and defense partner Duncan Keith to handle the Oilers’ potent top line, which featured superstar Connor McDavid at center along with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Kailer Yamamoto on the wings.

It’s a risk for any defender to take on McDavid, who the Penguins’ Sidney Crosby recently said was an “easy pick” for the NHL’s best player. But the risk was even greater for Jokiharju, who entered the showdown with all of 11 games of NHL experience.

• Blackhawks bench Jan Rutta, seek answers on defense

As he has done all season, Jokiharju proved to be up to the task. He and Keith subdued the Oilers’ potent top line throughout regulation, although McDavid eventually broke through in the three-on-three overtime while Jokiharju watched from the bench.

“He’s been great,” defenseman Brent Seabrook said. “I thought he was exceptional, the way he played. The way he’s able to skate and move, as a young defenseman, he makes a lot of smart plays. He’s good with the puck, confident with the puck, and he can shoot it.”

Expect more top assignments on the way for Jokiharju and Keith.

It looks as if the pairing will stick for quite some time — something Keith, 35, is eager to embrace.

“I was actually thinking about that before the game Sunday, thinking I’ve bounced around with a few different partners,” Keith said. “It’s a good feeling to know that he’s as young as he is and as good as he is. It definitely bodes well for the team and myself as a partner with him.”

Keith has provided guidance for Jokiharju throughout the season. But the rookie has helped the older guy, too.

“He allows me to play my game, for one thing,” Keith said. “For 19 years old, he’s pretty poised. He’s a great skater, he’s good with the puck, makes smart plays, good defensively. Defense isn’t an easy position to break into, and he’s doing it like a veteran.”

If Joki plays this year, won't he be exposed to Seattle? Others in the pipeline (drafted higher) will not be exposed. Chicago has so many NMC's (esp Seabrook), aren't they pretty much stuck? If I'm understanding this correctly, better to get something than nothing.

Perhaps Nylander just saw Buffalo as the toilet of the NHL and saw no future in the team and that affected his play??

Nylander appears to be excited to join the Hawks..... IDK, his personality but perhaps he feels entitled to play with better players?

Look it appears Strome turned it around, maybe Nylander can.... I mean he's young enough..

I will say this tho, Buffalo should have had to add something extra, but at the same time who knows what Hawks scouts see in Nylander -- apparently Bowman was a Nylander fanboy since his draft year so, and look I'm not one to question the Hawks scouts given they actually do have an eye for talent...

And look, it's possible Nylander not only makes the team but slides in on the left side with Toews and Kane and lights it up.... The kid is similar to Panarin, so who knows.... I mean 3-4 years ago people were saying "who is Panarin?" and presently he was one of the bigger if not the biggest UFA's this off-season...

I suppose my point is that I will trust the Hawks scouts on this one and I hope both players pan-out for both teams and it's a win for both..... I mean right now Joker appears to be the better player but if you look back at the Schmaltz for Strome/Perlini trade people were saying similar things to this trade so, yea only time will tell..

Interesting take, I was thinking the same, Perhaps if the Hawks shelved Nylander he wouldn't be eligible for the expansion draft but Joker would so why not get a guy you're high on, develop him in your system and after the draft bring him up...

That is a possible reason for this trade.... The Hawks are pretty deep on the blue line, and Seabrook and Keith are signed for several more years with NMC's...
